Many types of pear are grown in Poland, and they are either simply eaten raw or gently poached and served with a rich chocolate sauce, as in this recipe.
Cut the pears in half lengthways and remove the core. Place the sugar and water in a large pan and gently heat until the sugar has dissolved completely.
Add the pear halves to the pan, then simmer for about 20 minutes, or until the pears are tender but not falling apart. Lift out of the sugar syrup with a slotted spoon and leave to cool.
