Tradition claims that pounded yam is not the real deal unless the sweat of the person pounding the yam is in the finished product. Growing up, the process of making pounded yam with a mortar and pestle was physical labour! The yam would be pounded until it became smooth, firm, and doughy, taking a lot of time, energy, and sweat.
