This recipe, which originally appeared in Alfred Suzanne’s 1904 book La Cuisine et pâtisserie anglaise et américaine, is a great way to have your after-dinner drink and coffee at the same time. It also makes for a potent brunch drink–think of it as a creamy coffee julep.

Ingredients

  • 2 fl oz (60 ml) brewed espresso, at room temperature

Method

Combine the espresso, brandy, cream, simple syrup, and crushed ice in a shaker and shake hard for 8–10 seconds. Pour the whole mixture, ice and all, into a collins glass and sprinkle with the nutmeg. Serve with a straw.
