Perfected in New Orleans in the 1850s, this drink was not known outside of the area until Jerry Thomas included it in his 1887 edition of The Bar-Tender’s Guide. The look of the drink, with a coil of lemon zest nested in the glass and a rim frosted with sugar, made it as irresistible then as it is today.
