This hangover remedy from the late nineteenth century is unique in its use of Scotch whisky, with the club soda designed both to settle the stomach and to provide lift to the drink. The nutmeg, preferably freshly grated, makes a big difference to the drink, so don’t leave it out.
Combine the whisky, créme de cacao, and cream in a shaker. Add ice, shake hard for 8-10 seconds, and strain into a collins glass or a double old fashioned glass over ice. Add the club soda and stir well. Sprinkle with the nutmeg.
