Bartender Fernand Petiot reportedly created this classic in the 1920s at Harry’s New York Bar in Paris, an American-style bar owned at the time by a former well-known American jockey, Tod Sloan. It has changed greatly over the years, and everyone seems to have a favorite take calling for an extra pinch of one seasoning or another. This recipe is basic but well balanced.
