The origins of the Manhattan are disputed, but the drink was developed sometime in the 1860s. It shows up in the 1887 edition of Jerry Thomas’s The Bar-Tenders Guide, with the addition of a liqueur (Thomas suggests either curaçao or maraschino).

Ingredients

  • 2 fl oz (60 ml) rye whiskey or a high-rye Canadian whisky

Method

Combine the whiskey, vermouth, and bitters in a mixing glass filled with ice and stir until well chilled, 20–30 seconds. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass or coupe. Garnish with the cherries pieced together with a cocktail pick.
