This hot and sour soup is somewhat similar to the famous Thai tom yam gung soup, which of course is made with prawns/shrimp, and to the sinigang of the Philippines, which can be made with fish, prawns/shrimp or pork. Rasam, however, is entirely vegetarian, and the rice, even if only a little of it, is always put into the soup. It reminds me very much of my Indonesian sayur asam, except that that has boiled peanuts in it and we eat it with the rice served in a separate dish.
