  • ½ cup butter
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 4 teaspoons cold water
  • 1 teaspoon soda
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 cups flour
  • 1 cup preserved fruit, (Blackberry Jam)
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon cloves
  • ¼ teaspoon mace


Cream butter and sugar together until very light; add beaten yolks, water, soda, spices, preserves and flour. Stir all together, beat thoroughly, cut and fold in the beaten whites; bake in a loaf in a moderate oven about 45 minutes. When cool cover with Plain Icing.

Blackberry, Strawberry or Black Raspberry Jam may be used.
