This is based on a recipe by Dorothy Hartley, who describes it as a perfect picnic drink. I have used her method, which is very sound, macerating the ingredients in the wine, chilling it well and only adding the sparkling water when the claret cup is served. This is a much better plan than having an open punch bowl with a large block of ice.
