  • 2 lb braising steak, cut into small chunks
  • 3 tbsp tomato purée
  • 3 onions, sliced
  • 1 tbsp chilli powder
  • 1 tbsp garam masala
  • 1 tin chopped tomatoes
  • 2 tsp ginger/garlic mix
  • 3 tbsp oil
  • 3 dried whole hot chillies
  • Salt


  • Fry the onions until light brown in the oil.
  • Add the tomatoes, ginger, garlic and spices (except garam masala).
  • Cook for five minutes over medium heat, then add beef.
  • Stir and cook for three minutes.
  • Add water to cover the meat and cook (covered) over medium heat for an hour. Check to see if it is drying out; add water if it is.
  • Add garam masala, purée and salt, and cook for another half hour or until the meat is tender and you have a thickish gravy.
