Wash, peel, core and chop up the apples. Place in a large saucepan and add the vinegar. Peel and finely chop the onions. Simmer the onions for 5 minutes in boiling water. Then drain and add to the pan. Vinegar has a hardening effect on onions and so it is better to cook the onions a little first, before adding to the remaining ingredients.
