Rinse and pick over the damsons, removing the stalks. Prick with a stainless steel fork or skewer and put into an earthenware bowl. Dissolve the sugar in the vinegar over low heat. Add pickling spices and the cinnamon tied up in a muslin bag. Bring to the boil and simmer for 5 minutes. Pour over the damsons and leave to soak for 24 hours.
