This is also traditionally served with roast turkey.
Stud the onion with the cloves, and put it in a saucepan with the milk. Add the bay leaf, bring to the boil, then remove from the heat, cover and leave to infuse for 20–30 minutes. Stir in the breadcrumbs and butter, and cook gently for 15 minutes. Remove the onion, cloves and bay leaf and season to taste with the salt, pepper and nutmeg.
