Slices of crisp, buttery herb-flavoured breads combine deliciously with summer meals, particularly cold foods. Serve hot breads for a barbecue or outdoor meal and flavour them with herbs, garlic or savoury cheese.
Slice two Vienna loaves into diagonal slices, leaving the bottom crust whole. Spread both sides of each slice with any of the following flavoured butters; any butter left over may be spread over the top of the loaves. Wrap each loaf in aluminium foil and heat through in a moderately hot oven (200°C., 400 °F., Gas Mark 6) for 15–20 minutes. Serve at once; keep wrapped in the foil to hold the hea
