Autumn fruits like peaches, plums and pears make a pretty fruit salad and at this time of year you might find some Chinese gooseberries on sale. Buy just one and peel away the brown skin, then slice the bright green flesh in with the other fruits – the colour effect is quite startling.
Make the sugar syrup first and allow to cool before preparing the fruit. The lemon juice added helps keep any white fruits attractive in appearance. Measure the sugar and water into a small saucepan. Stir over low heat to dissolve the sugar and then bring to the boil. Simmer for 2 minutes, then draw off the heat and add the strained lemon juice. Pour into a serving bowl and allow to cool.
