When you travel in Spain you see the word ‘flan’ on every restaurant menu. Aged eighteen, I left England to join my sister and a group of friends in Morocco for a summer holiday. I travelled across Spain with my boyfriend in his dilapidated Mini van, but since I knew my mother would worry I told her that we were travelling with some older, married friends of his, and we sent postcards en route signed by all four of us. I remember that I had budgeted £1 a day for the expenses of the journey
