Although most of the wonderful bumper artichokes we buy in England are grown in Brittany, they are a vegetable which always reminds me of Italy. In Venice, in the early summer, one of the most beautiful sights is of boats laden down with a mountain of little purple and green artichokes making their way to the Rialto Market.
