This is a wonderful and very versatile wintery dish that is good to accompany roast meats and stews. You can create many variations depending on the season, using chopped prosciutto, slices of tomato, fresh herbs, mushrooms or gorgonzola and many other ingredients. A few slivers of truffle slipped between potato slices and baked in this manner are excellent.
