  • About

Although the basic preparation below may not sound like much by way of quantity, it will transform a quart of mixed fruits into an unusual brunch opener or fragrant dessert. Or serve a small quantity of the fruit over ice cream or a pudding; the sweet syrup is as heady and aromatic as brandy or vanilla sauce.

Ingredients

  • ½ pound (3 large) ripe feijoas
  • ½ cup water
  • ¼

Method

  1. Peel all dark green from fruits. Halve each lengthwise, then cut across in ½-inch slices.
  2. Bring water and sugar to a boil in small nonaluminum saucepan. Add fruit. Reduce heat to lowest point. Cover and poach (no bubbling in the syrup) until fruits have softened slightly—about 4 minutes.
  3. Gently pour into a dish and cool. Cover and chill.
