Caramel ice cream was all the rage in the first half of the twentieth century and I discovered recipes for it in booklets dating back to the late nineteenth century. Here I’ve tinkered with a custard-based caramel ice cream from Frigidaire Recipes (1928). My recipe adds a bit of my favorite sweetener, brown sugar, to the granulated and I added twice as much vanilla and salt (to counteract the sweetness).
