This really is a warming and happy-making lunch. Eat it wrapped in a large woollen jersey for the whole sheep experience.

I’m surprised I was not put off eating this first at school. I never reacted with the same eagerness as my contemporaries when Flying Saucers (deep-fried Spam) or Maryland Chicken were served up, but always smiled to myself as the grey, overcooked lamb appeared, daubed in anaemic onion sauce.
