Lovage is a very distinctive herb that sadly has disappeared from our tables. It is easy to grow for anyone with an allotment or garden who appreciates a pastis-like aniseed-curry twang. Cultivated lovage looks very different from the wilder strains, which are a lot darker, the leaf more pointed. Celery is a more flimsy alternative compared with the unmistakable punch of lovage, but it still works. Lovage goes very well with white meats and most fish.
