When fishing in autumn from Chesil Beach, my excitement as the rod tip judders often turns into disappointment as yet again I have tangled up an opportunistic spider crab. I am terrible at beach fishing, but have an uncanny knack of hooking spiders. Waiting for a bite, I will sometimes drift into a trance, engaged with the idea of the crab’s eye view as it slowly creeps over the sandy floor towards my bait.
