Serious chocolate cake

Chocolate has no claim to being a winter ingredient, but a rich chocolate cake is the ultimate comfort food, so it seemed legitimate to include a recipe. I made a version of the classic French almond and chocolate cake with chopped brandied prunes, which was well received by the family — until I made this one, which is utter indulgence, the quintessential chocolate cake.
