For making these particular brownies, small (4-ounce) bars of sweet chocolate labeled “German’s” can be found on the baking supplies shelf of most supermarkets. They have been a staple for many years, especially since some bygone cook developed a popular recipe for German’s Sweet Chocolate Cake, still to be found in many recipe collections. If you can’t locate the chocolate bars, check a confectioner’s shop for dark sweet chocolate in bulk, which does equally well.
