Method

Cream shortening, eggs, sugar; until fluffy. Add ⅓ crumbs, dates, and then the rest of the crumbs and milk alternately. Add the sifted dry ingredients. Beat briskly one minute, and bake in a greased pan 1 hour at 325°. Serve warm with hard sauce flavored with rum.
