Botany and medicinal plants were studied in depth, too. The pharmacist Ibn al-Baitar who lived in Malaga at the turn of the 13th century compiled a compendium of 1400 plants from Spain and North Africa with their names in Berber, Arabic, and sometimes Romance beside their applications and dosages Some fell into kitchen pots. And with the Moors’ talent for agriculture, vegetables gained a new lease on life Terracing meant that fruits and vegetables could be grown on the steep slopes of the sierra. Huertos (vegetable gardens) proliferated, irrigated by a system of shared water allocation via channels, or acequias. These are still widely used throughout Andalucía.
