The small amount of wine produced in Basilicata mostly comes from the Aglianico grape (probably introduced by the Greeks). The best wine is Aglianico del Vulture DOC, a rich red made from grapes grown on the east-facing slopes of the extinct volcano, Monte Vulture. The best makers of this wine have also produced an oak-aged Aglianico, called Canneto. Vino cotto is reduced grape juice, but in Basilicata they also make a similar intensely flavoured fig syrup, called vino cotto di fichi. And Basilicata’s famous digestif is Amaro Lucano.
