Javier Cabral was born in East Hollywood and raised in the backyards of East L.A. and the San Gabriel Valley. At a young age he became obsessed with the things we eat and drink and, in 2006, started one of the first food blogs in Los Angeles, titled Teenage Glutster. Finding his passion for food and writing at an early age helped him stay focused and come out of the ’hood.
At sixteen, he published his first paid article about Mexican American holiday food traditions at the now-defunct magazine LàTeen. He proudly attended Pasadena City College, but after getting rejected by University of Southern California due to his poor grades in algebra, he dropped out of school to write about food full-time. He hasn’t looked back. At twenty-one, working under James Oseland, he landed his first cover story about the rustic cuisine of Zacatecas, Mexico, for Saveur. Since then, he’s become an authority on all things L.A., Mexican American culture in the U.S. and Mexico, tacos, and punk rock.
