Don’t confuse harissa (a spicy paste) with harira (the Moroccan soup). Not familiar with harissa? It’s the condiment of choice in Morocco, Tunisia, and Algeria—the North African equivalent of ketchup or hot sauce. It’s a spicy paste made from hot chile peppers, garlic, olive oil, and a combination of spices, commonly caraway, cumin, and coriander, and it sometimes includes tomatoes. Harissa is sold in jars and is now often available in local grocery stores and in Middle Eastern markets, and is definitely available online.
