Lye

Food-grade lye (also known as sodium hydroxide or caustic soda) can be found at hardware stores, stores that carry homebrewing supplies, and craft stores (it’s also used in soap making). Just make sure what you buy is labeled food grade. And, of course, if you can’t find it locally, you can order it online.
