We like to make many recipes without a mixer. Why? Because a mixer is rarely 100 percent necessary, especially if your butter is at room temperature, so why bother? If you’re going to go the old-fashioned way, we highly recommend mixing in a wide-mouthed metal bowl (but any material will do just fine) with a simple wooden spoon. The wide-mouthed bowl makes it much easier to stir effectively and scrape down the sides while mixing to ensure a homogeneous batter or dough.
