Also known as yellow ginger, turmeric is used both for its flavour and its ability to colour a dish bright yellow. It tastes somewhat like a warmer, spicier version of ginger. Some people have even described it as bitter. Handle the orangey yellow flesh of turmeric with care because its juice is notorious for leaving stubborn stains, whether on your fingers, clothes, chopping board or counter top.
