Mise en place is most commonly associated with measuring out all of your ingredients before you start baking. However, I have five principles that I teach as the best way to prepare before you start your recipe.
1: Read the Recipe Through Completely
By reading the recipe thoroughly, you can gain a clear understanding of the workflow of the recipe and the timing involved. I have learned this the hard way, by starting a recipe that needed several hours of chilling time that I did not plan for. Many baking recipes also call for room-temperature ingredients. Reading the recipe thoroughly before you start will prompt you to plan ahead for these things.
