Now called Tanintharyi, this is the southernmost region of Burma, the long narrow part that borders Thailand to the east and the Andaman Sea to the west. The region is known for its rubber and areca nuts as well as for its remarkable seafood. The capital is Dawei; other towns are Mergui (Myeik) and, at the southern tip, Kawthoung.
