A term used to distinguish markets that sell vegetables and fish and meat from those that sell dry goods, clothing, and packaged foods. At wet markets, the emphasis is on freshness: most produce is locally grown and in many cases the fish and seafood, and sometimes also the chickens and ducks, are brought to the market alive and then prepared for customers when they are purchased. Most food markets in Burma are wet markets, although now there are some large upmarket stores with huge food sections springing up on the outskirts of Rangoon.
