  • About

A conical dome of stone or brick, sometimes coated in gold, marking a memorial shrine and containing Buddhist relics; sometimes written zedi. The Sanskrit word for the same structure is stupa. The huge golden dome of Shwedagon is a (Mon-style) chedi; so are the smaller bell-shaped structures around many temples. The umbrella-like structure at the top of every chedi is called a hti. See also Buddhism.
