There is a sizable Naga population in Burma around the upper Chindwin River; just across the Indian border is Nagaland, where the majority of the Naga live. Traditionally tribal and with a history of headhunting, the Naga were feared by the British and by lowlanders in general. Many Naga were converted to Christianity by missionaries in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The Naga are renowned for their fine textile traditions.
