Appears in
The Chinese Banquet Cookbook

By Eileen Yin-Fei Lo

Published 1985

  • About
Use a somewhat narrow white turnip, or Chinese turnip.
1. Cut a piece of turnip about 1½ inches wide. Around the outer edge, slice a row of petals by slicing from top to bottom into, but not through, the bottom of the turnip piece.
2. Then cut a ridge in the center of the turnip piece all the way through. Discard the piece.
3. Begin the second row of petals, positioning the second row of petals alternately between the petals of the first row.
4. Repeat the process of cutting and discarding ridges, and making petals until you have 4 rows.
