  • About

CULTIVATION This hardy perennial has aromatic, hollow, grass-like leaves and purple or white flowers from late spring. It grows to a height of 15-75 cm (6-29in) and prefers fertile, well-drained soil and sun or light shade. Propagate it by sowing seeds or planting bulblets in spring or by dividing the plant in autumn, planting them 15-23 cm (6-9in) apart. Harvest the leaves and flowers whenever they are available. It is an attractive garden, border, edging, container and conservatory herb. The essential oils in chives have anti-fungal and insecticide properties, so they can be used as companion plants for vegetables and fruit vulnerable to aphids.
