Brussels sprouts possibly get their name from the fact that they were first grown as early as 1200 in Belgium. Leafy green buds that resemble small cabbages, Brussels sprouts have a bad reputation, mainly due to improper cooking. Overcooking Brussels sprouts releases sulfur compounds in the vegetable that give it a distinctly off-putting odor. They possess a delicious nutty flavor when cooked properly.
