Peeling an Onion

  1. Onion should be dry and firm.

  2. Start by cutting the top of the onion. To limit irritation to your eyes, use a very sharp knife that will cut rather than crush the onion.

  3. Remove the root end by inserting the point of a small knife at an angle pointed toward the center of the onion.

  4. Cut in a circular motion cutting a cone-shape at the root end.

  5. Lightly score along the latitude of the onion.

  6. Loosen a corner of the skin with the point of the knife and pull the skin away.

  7. Continue, removing a second layer if needed.

  8. A peeled onion should not have any of the brown skin remaining.
