Species name: Cichorium endiva

Curly endive is native to Europe. Sometimes called chicory in North America, or chicorée frisée in France, it is not to be confused with the common chicory plant or its roots. Curly endive and chicory are two different species of the same genus. It is easy to get confused because the terms chicory and endive are often used interchangeably.

Curly endive, as its name suggests, has curly, bitter-tasting leaves. The outer leaves are dark green and more bitter than the creamy yellow inner leaves. One variation of curly endive is escarole.
