Species name: Morchella esculenta, Morchella conica
Morels are among the most difficult mushrooms to find, making them quite expensive. They are most commonly found in moist areas, in proximity with dying and decaying trees. Their nutty flavor and meaty texture make the effort to find them well worth the trouble. If you are lucky enough, morels can be found in some specialty stores from April through June and are sometimes available dried throughout the year. Some mushroom growers have succeeded in cultivating the morel, but they are still one of the most difficult mushrooms to grow.
