Species name: Agaricus bisporus
The white button mushroom is a cultivated field variety and the most cultivated worldwide. White button mushrooms are grown commercially in mushroom houses where both temperature and humidity are carefully monitored and controlled. The rich compost they are grown in is a combination of cottonseed, gypsum, straw, corncobs, cocoa seed hulls, and nitrogen supplements. Within the first few weeks of the growing process, peat moss is applied to the compost. Mature mushrooms are ready for harvesting approximately three weeks after the peat moss is applied.
