Species name: Daucus carota L.
Carrots are native to Europe and southwestern Asia. Most often orange, the carrot has a crisp texture when fresh. The carrot plant grows a rosette of leaves in spring and summer, while building roots which store large amounts of sugars that allow the plant to flower in the second year. The stem will produce a cluster of white flowers. Carrots are now selectively bred to produce different colors.
