Black Currant

Black currants are indigenous to northern Asia and central and northern Europe. They are also known as the cassis berry. Black currants grow on small fragrant shrubs that are 3 to 6 feet (1 to 2 meters) tall. The berries, which are a glossy purple-black color, grow in clusters similar to those of the grape. The black currant is used predominantly to make liquor, wine, and soft drinks and in meat dishes, sauces, and baked goods.
