Boysenberry

The boysenberry is a hybrid that was developed in California by Rudolph Boysen. The boysenberry is a large glossy berry, reddish-purple in color, with a tart taste.

Rudolph Boysen was a berry farmer who believed in experimenting with different berry crosses in the 1920s. In 1923, he crossed a blackberry, loganberry, and raspberry with amazing results. The hybrid plant that was produced flowered and bore fruit. It was named the boysenberry after its inventor. By 1935 the rights to the plant were secured by Walter Knott, a Southern California berry farmer, and he began to sell the fruit commercially.
