Loganberry

The exact origin of the loganberry is undetermined. Some botanists believe that the loganberry is a distinct species of fruit, whereas others believe it to be a hybrid of the raspberry and the blackberry. The loganberry is shaped like a blackberry, red in color, juicy; and sweetly tart.

In the case of the accidental hybrid, the loganberry has an interesting story. Some believe that the loganberry was created in the early 1880s by James Harvey Logan in Santa Cruz, California. During this time, berry growers had begun to cross different varieties of raspberries and blackberries to produce better commercial varieties. Logan accidentally planted a cross between two blackberry varieties next to an older variety of red raspberry. All of the plants fruited and flowered together producing a rather interesting hybrid.
